As a Senior Associate at the Institute on Governance, Peter Bruce is facilitating delivery of the Institute’s Executive Leadership Program (ELP). He has extensive experience in executive positions primarily in the public sector. He has been working in increasingly complex and interesting VP/ADM/CIO/CTO roles since 1997 when he became the Chief Information Officer for the Federal Department of Justice. Over the past 20 years, Mr. Bruce worked as an IT Executive in the Ontario Government and the Government of Canada.

This includes positions with the Ontario Ministry of Education, Library and Archives Canada, Treasury Board Secretariat, the Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as well as Shared Services Canada. He retired at the end of 2016 from the position of Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for the Strategy and Client Relations Branch at Shared Services Canada. While he makes a broad strategic contribution, the focus of his career has been improving government programs, services and operations through effective use of information and communications technology. This has been achieved by aligning an ambitious portfolio of investments with the Government’s strategy and leading the portfolio of investments to successful completion.

Academic achievements include an undergraduate degree in Computer Science (BSc) from the University of Ottawa and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Queen’s University. Mr. Bruce has also studied cognitive science and continues to learn and explore leadership and the transformational possibilities created by advances in information and communications technology.
